“History is the product of our invented past.”
Peter Alexander Kerkhof gives his tip to become more culturally competent is:
- History is the product of our invented past. Living history goes back no more than 3 generations. After that, it becomes a legend. Our current situation, our here-and-now, is a product of much more than 3 generations. It goes back hundreds and thousands of years. Realize this and when you do, you can better understand your own situation and the situation of other cultures.

Chris, for linguists and interculturalists like myself, your interview with Peter Alexander was marvellous: clearly, he knows his subject very well and explains his insights very well. I too loved the bit about the Dutch influence on French pronunciation; like you, I will tease my French colleagues with this piece of expert knowledge! Keep ’em coming!
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the compliments.
Indeed, it’s also a topic that I really like: language. It’s so much more than words.
I’m sure Peter Alexander would give you more insights if you’d contact him.
Spread the word about the podcast!
Kind regards,
Chris
